Emergency Medical Technology

Program Overview

The Emergency Medical Technology (EMT) program at the Eastern North Carolina Regional Skills Center prepares students for careers in emergency medical services and healthcare. Students learn how to provide critical, life-saving care in pre-hospital settings while developing the skills needed to respond confidently in emergency situations.

Through a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on skills training, and real-world simulations, students gain foundational knowledge in patient care, anatomy and physiology, and emergency response systems. This program introduces students to the essential roles and responsibilities of emergency responders and prepares them for entry-level certifications and continued education in the healthcare field.

What Students Will Learn

Students in the EMT program develop both technical and professional skills, including:

  • Emergency patient assessment and basic life support techniques
  • Trauma care and medical emergency response
  • Use of emergency equipment and first responder tools
  • Anatomy and physiology related to injury and illness
  • Communication and teamwork in high-pressure environments
  • Understanding of emergency medical systems and protocols

Students will participate in realistic emergency scenarios and simulations that build critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills necessary for success in emergency medical services.

Course Sequence

  • Emergency Medical Technology I (IP21)
    Introduction to emergency medical systems, patient care, and responder responsibilities.
  • Emergency Medical Technology II (IP22)
    Advanced skills development, clinical applications, and preparation for certification.

This pathway is designed as part of North Carolina Career and Technical Education (CTE) and requires strong communication skills and completion of prerequisite coursework.

Credentials & Certifications

Students have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized credentials, which may include:

  • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Certification
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) Certifications
  • Stop the Bleed Certification

Successful completion of the program prepares students for future EMT certification pathways at the postsecondary level.

Work-Based Learning Opportunities

Students may engage in:

  • Clinical observations or field experiences with local EMS agencies
  • Simulated emergency response scenarios
  • Guest speakers and partnerships with community healthcare professionals

These experiences provide insight into real-world EMS operations and career expectations.
